Two of Vancouver's top restaurants launch new books!
As Vancouver prepares to open it’s doors to the world for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, two of its top restaurants will be launching new cookbooks with Whitecap this fall, Mangia with Quattro and C Food.
Mangia with Quattro features family style Italian foods from the heart as father and son team Antonio and Patrick Corsi, owners of Quattro on Fourth, Quattro at Whistler and Gusto di Quattro share their favorite dishes and recipes from the restaurants. This book is organized like an a la carte menu and includes a section on Italian pantry basics; these meals are meant to be shared with friends, cooked with fresh ingredients and for living with abbondanza (Italian for abundance and a passion for life).
C Food is world-renowned for its innovation, taking their classic seafood dishes to new and unexpected places. Owner Harry Kambolis and executive chef Robert Clark takes their most popular dishes and pairs it with the creative energy of the restaurant in this stunning cookbook that is beautifully photographed. It also features delicious meat, vegetables and dessert dishes-C Restaurant was recently voted one of the 101 Places to eat before you die!Check out this article about C Food in the Metro News today: http://www.metronews.ca/vancouver/comment/article/360554--fab-five-sample-this-book-buffet

Chef Michael Smith’s identity stolen on Twitter
Press release – September 24, 2009
11:30 am EST
Halifax, N.S. - On the eve of launching his new cookbook The Best of Chef at Home and beginning celebrations for Prince Edward Island’s Fall Flavours festival, Chef Michael Smith has discovered that a complete stranger has stolen his identity on Twitter. The fraud was discovered earlier today when a writer for the Montreal Gazette questioned several negative tweets about the Montreal restaurant scene posted by the impostor.
All of this is a complete surprise to Michael Smith, who does not twitter. A lawyer has been consulted, and not only is Michael trying to get his identity removed from that site but he is calling on Twitter to notify all followers of the feed that they have been deceived. “Frankly I’m overwhelmed. I’m very, very angry. I can’t believe that anyone would say such horrible things about Montreal. Worse yet they’ve been writing about my family, they’ve deceived my fans and stolen what I’ve worked so hard to build,” says Michael. “I don’t fault Twitter but I do expect them to help make this right.”
Chef Michael Smith is one of the Food Network’s biggest stars, now appearing in the sixth season of Chef at Home and second season of Chef Abroad. His fourth cookbook The Best of Chef at Home has also just been released. As Prince Edward Island’s food ambassador he is just about to kick off the annual Fall Flavours harvest festival.
The new social media monitoring program White Noise will now be following references to Michael Smith in the media and on the internet.

More about Pierre Lamielle: Challenging the Traditional Cookbook, One Pun at a Time ...
One of the most unique cookbooks coming out this September 2009, is not your average cookbook. Kitchen Scraps by Pierre Lamielle is the sort of cookbook where easy-to-follow recipes are accompanied by hilarious illustrations of provocative chickens and babushka-clad grandmothers and where mutant beef monsters compete for ultimate burger supremacy. For cookbook author and illustrator Pierre Lamielle, his illustrated food column at the Calgary Herald’s Swerve magazine is where it all began. The column combined Pierre’s knack for offbeat writing and irreverent illustrations with some fantastic recipes. As a B.C. native, Pierre took design and illustration courses at Capilano College, and after graduation, he worked for both the Vancouver Sun and the Province as a feature designer. He then moved to Calgary to work at Swerve magazine, where his ideas for Kitchen Scraps bloomed. But he needed more formal culinary training, so he enrolled in the French Culinary Institute in New York City. Kitchen Scraps combines Pierre’s wild imagination and illustrations with comforting recipes that don’t come from a can.
Check out more of Pierre’s artistic talents and his Kitchen Scraps blog at http://kitchenscraps.ca/. and look for his illustration on the cover of City Palate Calgary for their September/October issue!

In the midst of the busily producing our lovely Fall books, the staff here at Whitecap have found the time to take some much needed vacation days this summer. There are some fun “mini-breaks” planned for Montreal, the Yukon, Toronto, San Francisco and even Vegas!
Nothing beats an exciting getaway with friends or family, but traveling in this day and age can be hectic and stressful if you’re not prepared. Long lines at the airport, jet lag, health concerns and travel logistics can certainly be a drag on your fun vacation. To help you get the most out of your trip and travel with ease, make sure you grab a copy of travel expert Claire Newell’s Travel Best Bets: An Insider’s Guide to Taking the Best Trips Ever before you go. It contains awesome tips for planning, staying safe in foreign countries, packing checklists and traveling with kids!
Check out some of Claire’s tips below, and happy vacationing!
CLAIRE’S BEST BETS FOR READY…SET…PREPARE!
• Putting together a written itinerary helps you keep all the travel details together—and it gives those at home an easy way to reach you if needed.
• When it comes to money, take a little of everything: cash, traveller’s cheques, debit cards, and credit cards.
• Check which electrical current your destination uses to avoid frying your hair dryer!
• Don’t forget to take security precautions for your home before you leave.
• When it comes to packing, keep one cardinal rule in mind: go light!!
She doesn’t have any tips though, for your friends snoozing during a two-hour slide show
of your fabulous vacation-you’re on your own for that!

TASTE: Victoria’s Festival of Food and Wine is happening this weekend!!
Nothing compliments a fabulous meal like a glass of crisp and delicious wine. For me, it’s a glass of the Jackson-Triggs Chardonnay paired with a grilled salmon that makes my day. If you ever wanted to learn more about the different types of wine or which wine pairings go with which meals, than you should sip, swirl and sniff your way over to Taste: Victoria’s Festival of Food and Wine this weekend in Victoria, B.C.
It’s an extra long weekend of 15+ tastings, delicious seminars, and fun events from Thursday, July 16 to Sunday, July 19, 2009. This is a great opportunity to try an assortment of local cuisines and wines from B.C, as well as tour farms and vineyards throughout Victoria.
Whitecap author John Schreiner will be speaking at a couple of events and also signing the revised and updated version of his book The Wineries of B.C. Be sure to check him out at The Wine Barrel VQA Wine Shop from 4-6pm on Friday, July 17. This is a must attend event for all wine lovers out there! Sip away!
