Who has front teeth that can grow as big as a baseball bat?
No more school, no more books…or maybe some books! Looking for some summer reading to keep your kids entertained? School may be out for the summer, but keep it fun by checking out the Whose…? Animal series by author and photographer Wayne Lynch.
Even though I (and others here at Whitecap) can be classified as a grownup, we still enjoy flipping through the Whose…? Animal series to see if we can identify Whose Teeth Are These? or Whose Nose Is This? And coming soon: Whose Eyes Are These? Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!
For more information on our children’s titles, check out our Walrus Books Blog for fun summer reading.
(By the way…the answer to the above question is—a walrus!) - May13
Barbecue Tweet Contest – Week 1 Winner Announced
Rockin' Ronnie Shewchuck has announced the winner of the first week of our Barbecue Tweet Contest over on his blog. There were so many incredible barbecue recipes, tips and stories that I certainly didn't envy him the task of picking a winner.
Here's what he had to say about the entries we received last week:
There were simple, delicious recipes like graemeb3's: "The easiest and most delicious BBQ salmon recipe: salmon covered in mild salsa placed on tinfoil. Great when camping too!"
Carib1028 had my mouth watering with this nicely condensed recipe for a stuffed burger: "saute onions, shitake/load on thin patty w/ cheese/top w/ thin patty/seal/grill w/ R&Ds BBQ sauce/serve on toasted bun/ooz'n."
GisellLaRose shared a delicious take on burger seasoning: "My secret weapon in my homemade bbq sauce or hamburgers is sesame oil and cumin. Sooo good, you have to try it!"
I also got some excellent tips, like this one from 8chocolate: "When cooking fish on barbq, wrap seasoned fillets in cabbage leaves. Protects fish, keeps juices in and can eat the cabbage 2."
All excellent and worthy of honorable mention. It was a hard choice, but here is the winner, which is a very short but touching barbecue story from YVRBcbudz: "I had real BBQ from a southern grandma the day the LA riots started and it was a coming together of races over pulled pork." That pretty much captures the spirit of barbecue as far as I'm concerned.
Congratulations YVRBcbudz!

Wondering who won our Christie's Corner contest?
Yesterday was the big day! Vanessa McMackin was crowned the winner of our Christie's Corner/Whitecap Cooks Facebook fanpage contest with her comment: "I'm a recipe addict. Christie's Corner is my enabler." Now Vanessa will receive the three books Charmian reviewed on her blog (The Complete Light Kitchen, Everyday Indian and Ultimate Foods for Ultimate Health) plus three more chosen personally by Charmian for her. Another added bonus is a 15-minute phone conversation with Everyday Indian author, Bal Arneson.
We had a lot of great responses to the contest. It was great to see how much people love cookbooks, cooking and Christie's Corner. Check out all the fabulous comments on our Whitecap Cooks Facebook fanpage. We'd also love for you to become a fan yourself and comment, contribute to the discussion or just stay up to date with what we've got going on. It's a busy time for Whitecap right now, so this is an excellent place to stay on top of what's going on when and where and maybe you could even win some more stuff!
Thanks very much to everyone who participated as well as Charmian Christie who was nice enough to give us space on her blog to run this contest. Check out her posting announcing the winner.

Introducing The Walrus Books Blog
Did you know that we publish children's books? Yep. We sure do.
Walrus Books is an imprint of Whitecap Books that specializes in children's titles. It's known for its readable and scientifically accurate non-fiction for young audiences and high-quality fiction series for teens. We'll forgive you if you've maybe overlooked our amazing children's list up to this point, but from this point on you have no excuse. That's because we've created a new blog devoted exclusively to Walrus Books.
Because our children's books are so different from other Whitecap titles, we want to give Walrus Books its own identity and create a place for fans and authors to get to know each other. Many of our children's authors are doing incredible things like giving workshops in schools, rehabilitating injured birds and swimming with manatees. They're also writing some of the most engaging children's books on the market today. I think the combination of these two things will make the Walrus Books Blog a pretty fascinating read.
Head over and let us know what you think.

Think making pastry is difficult?
Pastry scares me. Well... making my own pastry scares me. Eating it is something I actually quite like. So, when I first saw Michel Roux's new book, Pastry: Savory & Sweet, I thought it would be way over my head. When I actually had the chance to flip through it, though, Michel inspired me to face my pastry-making fears and follow his expert guidance.
I think what I like best about this book is how Michel breaks down the process behind making great pastry. With detailed illustrations and descriptions of how to make 10 different types of pastry, you'll quickly learn what it takes to master the techniques Michel shows you. Once you've mastered the technique (or if you're a pro and you already have mastered them), Michel provides you with a host of delicious looking recipes to make with each type of pastry dough.
Wow, I can't wait to start trying these recipes out! Posting a recipe for this book is a bit complicated with all the illustrations, etc. and I want you to have the best possible experience with it, so hit your local bookstore and take a look. I think you'll really enjoy it.If you give this book a try, comment here and let us know how you did with Chef Michel's expert guidance!

Spring is on its way. Don’t worry!
It sure is grey out there, and if you're anything like me, you sometimes have a hard time remembering what the ground looked like before it started snowing. There is some hope, though. Spring is not that far away. Really! Did you know that there is no better time than now to get ready for a beautiful spring/summer west coast garden? Vancouver Sun garden columnist, Steve Whysall sure does.
In his book The Vancouver Sun's Best Plant Picks, Steve gives month-by-month tips on planning the perfect west coast garden. Some of January tips? How about browsing seed catalogues and placing an order? Or beginning seeds indoors getting them ready for the warm days ahead? In February you can start planting raspberry canes and other fruit bushes. Yum - I can taste those fresh raspberries now!
Steve also gives the low-down on what plants and flowers are in bloom. In January, you'll notice the yellow flowers of witch-hazel. Clip a few branches to enjoy its exquisite fragrance indoors, out of the cold and rain. Beautiful little snowdrops also bloom in January and February - sure signs that spring is on the way. If you want to plan ahead for the dark days of winter next year, plant these bulbs along with your other spring flowering bulbs in September or October.
Doesn't that make you feel better?
Do you have any winter gardening tips or favourite January or February blooms? Comment on this post!
